Shifting Tides

Directed by James Mertz

For hundreds of years communities surrounding the Chesapeake Bay Watershed have built their lives around the concept of working the water, but as younger generations become deterred from entering the aging industry, the remaining watermen have been left clinging to traditions and values that are quietly slipping away. “Shifting Tides” explores a set of multi-generational watermen based in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, and asks how each are adapting to the rising costs, increased regulation, and growing effects of climate change they face day to day. By understanding how this set of economic and environmental issues impacts each individual, it becomes clear that a way of life, thread throughout the region, is at risk of being lost.
